Compression knit
The modern world is aware of several types of knitwear and almost all of them are used for tailoring. But one type of this fabric is used for completely unexpected purposes - healing. Compression knitwear differs from the others in that it consists of nylon, lycra, cotton and microfiber, and due to the tightening properties it has a positive effect on the condition of the vessels.
It is interesting that it became known a long time ago about the therapeutic effect of stockings, but it was only two centuries ago that the use of compression hosiery was used in medicine. But the story of creating linen of this material is very banal.
A bit of history
Initially, people used bandages and ordinary pressure bandages to treat vascular diseases. They were terribly uncomfortable, contributed to the occurrence of open ulcers and even after their removal remained terrible discomfort and fatigue in the legs. When elastic bandages appeared on sale, the situation improved slightly, but one unpleasant moment remained - they needed to be wound in a certain way, and it took a lot of time and effort.
And so, in 1920, the first compression underwear was created in Sweden. Its creator, Maurice Ganzoni, managed to combine a unique healing effect with convenience and gave the compression bandage the look of simple tights, golf and stockings. Today on sale can be found as a compression garment, and the bandages themselves.
What is it and what is it for
The basis of the creation of compression knitwear is a seamless technology for processing synthetic materials. Initially, a rubber thread was used to create them, but modern technologies allow maintaining the optimum temperature balance of the skin due to the processing of the fabric with silver ions. As a result, the fabric has antibacterial properties and is well kept on the foot.
Constant wear of knitwear is shown to people with varicose veins and impaired venous circulation. The sock of this linen is also shown to people who work most of the time sitting or standing. Periodic compression knitted sock is recommended for pregnant women and individuals who have undergone vein surgery. In all cases, compression garments act in the same way - improves blood circulation and prevents the occurrence of blood clots.
Compression classes
The principle of the therapeutic effect of compression hosiery is based on the fact that in the process of its wearing there is a different pressure on certain parts of the legs. The maximum possible pressure is experiencing the area from the feet to the ankle. From the ankle to the thigh, the pressure slightly decreases and reaches 70% of the maximum possible. In the femoral region, the pressure decreases as much as possible and reaches 30 - 40% of the maximum possible. Such a difference in pressure contributes to the fact that the blood in the veins does not stagnate, but circulates normally.
Indications and Contraindications
It is interesting that, depending on the condition of the patient, different types of compression knitwear can be prescribed:
- For people with mild swelling of the legs, as well as a strong feeling of fatigue in the limbs and older people with serious heart diseases, knitwear is designed, which exerts pressure of 8-15 mm Hg. Art.
- People with minor varicose veins, as well as pregnant women and travelers are prescribed knitwear at 15-20 mm Hg. Art.
- For people with thrombosis, moderate varicose veins, postoperative patients and persons with diseases of the joints is intended knitwear at 20-30 mm Hg. Art.
- For individuals with severe edema, severe varicose diseases and severe venous ulcers, knitwear of 30-40 mm Hg is prescribed. Art.
- For the treatment of lymphatic edema, people are prescribed the most squeezing type of knitwear. It exerts a pressure of 49 mm Hg on the leg. Art. and higher.
But despite the unique healing properties of compression hosiery, it is not for everyone. People with acute venous insufficiency and chronic diseases of the arteries such as atherosclerosis, thromboangiitis, aortoarteritis and compression knitwear are not strictly recommended to wear.
The prohibition category also includes people with severe violations of the skin surface of the feet and feet due to diabetes, bedsores, eczema and open wounds. As you can see, the use of compression hosiery is not always a panacea for vascular diseases, so consult with your doctor - phlebologist before using it.
How to choose
If you still put compression knitwear you need to learn how to choose it. Now on sale you can find both compression knit bandages and underwear. With the modern way of life it is best to use the latest version of knitwear. When choosing compression underwear, consider the following:
- If the problem area of the legs ends in the lower leg area, it is better to buy socks.
- If the problem has spread higher, it is better to use stockings and pantyhose.
Modern manufacturers pay attention not only to the therapeutic properties of compression hosiery, but also to its appearance. On sale you can find women's compression underwear with patterns and translucent texture. Lingerie for men is chosen according to the skin color so that it is as inconspicuous as possible.
The size
With proper selection of compression underwear is of great importance size. To find out exactly what kind of underwear you need, you need to correctly measure the volume of the thigh at a distance of 25 - 30 cm above the knee (A), as well as the circumference of the knee (B), calf (C), lower leg (D) and foot (I). It is advisable to make measurements in the morning, be sure to record the parameters and remember the following:
- If C equals 32–35 cm, and D equals 20–23 cm, respectively, then you will need golf of size S. If the above values exceed each figure by 3 cm, then you will need size M, if 6 cm - L, and if 9 cm, then XL.
- If A is equal to 44-52 cm, C is 29 - 37 cm, and D is 19 - 22 cm, stockings of size S will be required. If the above-mentioned values exceed each indicator by 6 cm, then M will be needed if 12 cm - the size of L, and if at 18 cm, then the size of XL.
According to the principle of stockings, compression tights should also be chosen. If you have wide hips and A is equal to 67 - 60 cm, C - 29 - 37 cm, and D is 19 - 22 cm, then you will need the smallest stockings or pantyhose. But bandages for the feet should be chosen taking into account the circumference of the feet and legs.
How to wear and wear
But to put on compression underwear is incredibly difficult, because with all its elasticity it is quite easily torn. If we consider that it costs a lot, the slightest mistake in the process of dressing can literally cost a lot. That is why, before you put on compression underwear should carefully read the instructions.
Immediately I would like to note that it is better to start putting on stockings in the morning, while the legs are not swollen. It is important to take care that there are no long nails and corns on the legs, because they can simply pull on the fabric or tear it. It is better to start to tighten the linen in latex gloves, and to act as follows:
- Collect the top of the product in an accordion and slowly start putting on with the foot. It is important to ensure that the product in the process is not stretched and not twisted.
- Next, you need to gradually straighten the accordion, pulling linen on the lower leg.
- On the hips, the compression knit should be stretched while lying down, slightly rising when the fabric reaches the waist.
To simplify the process of putting on compression underwear can be used and auxiliary means.
Device for putting on
On sale now there are four types of assistive devices for putting on compression garments. In fact, they are plastic products, on which the linen is simply stretched to form a sufficient opening for the leg. After a careful tension in the hole, it remains to simply insert the leg, and gently removing it from the device, pull it over the hips. But since the physical capabilities of patients are different and four types of such devices were invented at once:
- For persons whose mobility is limited, the devices of their category "Longo" are intended.
- For large people developed devices from the "Big" series.
- For people who are going to wear underwear on a long journey, a folding device from the Treyvel series is intended.
- The Hospital Butler series with sliding mechanism is used in hospitals.
The features and duration of compression underwear should be clearly coordinated with your doctor.
